Tomatoes And Sewage Treatment Plants

Tomato plants growing in treated sewage
Tomato plants growing in treated sewage

Published Date: 16 September 2009
TOMATO plants have been popping up in the most unexpected places –
but you would not xpect them to thrive at a sewage treatment works.
This picture clearly shows a plucky plant growing among the rags and paper which were removed during the first stage of the process at the waste water treatment works off Coastal Road, Burniston.

Over the course of the summer, dozens of tomato plants have sprung up at a number of sewage pumping works in the area, often sprouting in some of the most unlikely of places – including skips full of paper and rags.

Andrew Jackson, who is responsible for the overall running of the Scarborough hitech works, said: "In the past, I've seen the odd tomato plant growing around the site but, this year, they've been particularly
prevalent.

"This could be as a result of the mild weather we've experienced over the last few months or, perhaps more significantly, it could be the result of changing dietary habits with people abandoning the winter
stodge to eat more healthy foods – including tomatoes.

"Whatever the reason, it's great to have them growing on the site, though people needn't worry about us supplying any bigname supermarkets any time soon, as the plants either die of natural causes or are invariably destroyed when skips full of waste are removed from our sites."

In the past there have been instances of tomatoes cropping up at sewage works but it is thought that the summer's above average temperatures, coupled with regular bouts of rainfall, have played their part in
ensuring a bumper crop at many of Yorkshire Water's works.

Mr Jackson said that the seeds were not digested by the human body and are among the waste removed during the firststage of the treatment process.

Most seeds are removed from the waste water as sludge – essentially manure – before being heated, dried and pressed and turned into compost which is then distributed to farms and local authorities.

He said: "Invariably, the compost contains tomato seeds which grow into plants, prompting regular stories from farmers who report rogue tomatoes growing among their crops."

Let's Get Ready For Summer

Welcome summer, it's not here yet but that doesn't mean we can't start thinking about it.
First you need a tan.  I have tried just about every sunless tanner out there and by far the best is St. Tropez.
It's a little unsettling at first it's like Hershy's Syrup, but don't let that scare you. The end result is a brown pinky tan and it doesn't SMELL. You'll be brown right away as this is also a bronzer.

Okay, the catch to this perfect product it's pricy at $37.00 per 8 oz. but so worth it.

Pledge Multi Surface

I was really hoping this would be the answer to all my surface cleaning, it's not.  It leaves streaks. Windex is still the best.

Use Newspaper

To keep weeds at bay in your garden, use newspapers instead of garden net. It lasts about a year.  The newspaper will just disappear.

Another good use for newspapers is to use it for seedling pots.

Cherry Blossom Festival Washington D.C.

The blizzards of 2010 have destroyed the cherry blossoms. Many of the trees have broken branches and split the trees in two. Park Rangers have said that this year will not be a good year for cherry blossom viewing but by next year they should recover.

New Olympic Medal Design

By Josephine Minutillo
Long before the athletes go for the gold at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, native son Omer Arbel won the commission to design the medals the winning competitors will sport around their necks. Trained as an architect, Arbel divides his time equally between designing buildings and objects since founding his own firm, Omer Arbel Office, in 2005. The medals, however, are a first for Arbel, whose industrial design projects consist mainly of furniture and lighting. “We’ve never done anything like this before,” he admits.

Arbel’s design is also a first for the Olympics since each medal is unique. Produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, each of the 4-inch-wide medals in solid bronze, silver, and gold plate is laser-etched with a cropped section of a larger artwork by Canadian artist Corrine Hunt—an orca whale on the 615 Olympic medals, and a raven on the 399 medals for the Paralympics (taking place in Vancouver in March). Like a puzzle, it takes all of the individual medals to complete the artwork.
The medal’s undulating surface evokes the iconic sea and mountains of the Vancouver-Whistler landscape, but developed from Arbel’s initial design concept of a locket—its bulging form containing a secret compartment in which to store a personal keepsake from the Games. While manufacturing and cost constraints prevented Arbel from pursuing his early idea, he is pleased with the final outcome.  “With the exception of Torino in 2006, every medal design for past Olympic Games has relied on allegory,” he explains. “With this design, the recipients will respond emotionally to the medal’s tactile quality rather than a symbol inscribed on it.”

Miracle Worker - Baking Soda

Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of the worlds miracle workers. It can be used for cleaning, whitens laundry, and teeth, put it in your bath to sooth and soften skin. And best of all it's the best skin exfolliant out there. It breaks down to round corners so you'll never injure your skin like other pricier brands. Plus it's ph balanced and won't irritate even the most sensitive skin.

Use baking soda mixed with peroxide and use as a whitning agent for your teeth.
Add it to laundry to whiten your dirtiest items.
Use it as a cleanser to clean your sink or bathtub. Best of all it won't scratch.

Regional Favorite Imo's Pizza

Imo's Pizza

What makes Imo's so special is the Provel Cheese and the only place in the world that it's made is St.Louis .

Provel is a white processed cheese that is popular in St. Louis, Missouri. Provel is produced with Cheddar, Swiss, and provolone. It is soft at room temperature, with a gooey and almost buttery texture, and thus has a low melting point. It is the traditional topping for St. Louis-style pizza. It is also often served on salads, chicken and the Gerber sandwich. Some restaurants go a step further and use Provel for their pasta dishes with white sauce instead of the customary fresh Italian cheese and cream. Although popular in the St. Louis area, Provel is rarely used elsewhere.
